The interesting thing about the fedora hat is that it was originally worn by women. Most people would probably think of men in the 1920s sporting fedoras and long coats, which is true. But the fedora actually came from the title of an 1882 play by dramatist Victorien Sardou, Fédora, written for Sarah Bernhardt. Bernhardt played Princess Fédora, the heroine of the play, and she wore a center-creased, soft brimmed hat. The hat became fashionable for women and the women’s rights movement adopted it as a symbol.
The fedora didn’t become popular with men until after Prince Edward of Britain started wearing them in 1924. Soon after that, American gangsters began to wear them during prohibition from the mid-1920s, which is probably when they started making customized fedoras for big heads. In the 1940s and 1950s, noir films popularized fedora hats and their popularity lasted until the late 1950s when informal clothing became more widespread.
But the reason fedoras have always made a comeback has to do with how they’re portrayed as “manly” in media. Think about Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant on the screen and Frank Sinatra on the stage. Or Indiana Jones wearing one as he takes down bad guys and explores the jungle. Even in music, you can’t forget about Michael Jackson from Smooth Criminal, Billie Jean, and Dangerous to You Rock My World.
Even in the past decade, television series like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men have depicted masculine characters sporting fedoras (maybe even fedoras for big heads) in a fashionable way. Although it went in and out of fashion throughout history, the fedora was and will be one of the most stylish hats of the past 100+ years!
